Facilities Drawings and Plans Introduction

Thoughtful design of Head Start facilities will ensure that they are child-oriented, developmentally appropriate, beautiful, environmentally sensitive, and functional.
This section offers suggestions for ensuring that grantees carefully review plans, keep in mind technical criteria, and approve well-designed facilities while keeping in mind costs, needs, requirements, and environment, and careful use of resources.

The design of a Head Start center should accommodate the needs of children, parents, teachers, administrators, and service personnel in a comfortable and nurturing environment.  It must allow adults to care for children in settings designed primarily for use by children. Refer to the Tip Sheet on Design Phases for information about the five phases and the architect’s involvement.
